ALCANTARA RIVER NATURAL REGIONAL PARK

Alcantara river

Alcantara river born in Calarvello Mount, in Floresta (Nebrodi - Messina). It's long 48 kms and it's the line that divides Catania from Messina. The original name was Uadi-Al-Qantarah, that in Arab means "bridge's river", for the bridge that Romans built on Valeria Street in the III rd century b. C. Across the river you can find many natural  wonderful sculptures, such us sculpt wind faces, big monolithics with strange anthropomorphic forms. At Roccella Valdemona, there is one that remembers Dante's profile for the ricurve nose.

They are basalthic walls, so high  and big that the ones in the world similar are Fin gal Caves in Ebridi Islands, in Scotland. They were created by Etna eruptions and were discovered in II nd half of XX th century, like background for a movie.

Larderia Goats (or Alcantara Goats), are in Larderia, located in Castiglione di Sicilia. On the Highway A19 CT-ME exit at Fiumefreddo, and following the indications for Castiglione, across SS 185. You can park the car in a big free parking and get down at the river using rudimental stares or the elevator.

It's better having in car a dress change. You can rent rubber shoes at the ticket office. You can proceed in the river for one hundred meters, than you can swim to reach a small lake with a cascata or return on the beach. The better period for having this excursion is spring or summer, better not 25th on April or 1st on may or 15th on august, because it's impossible to feel the peace of the place for the presence of too many people.

In Canoa o Discesa Libera

You can descend the river in canoa. For this excursion is better to contact associations with guide service. It's an unforgettable experience and more suggestive way to visit the Goats.

Moio Alcantara

It's a volcanic little mountain that gives the name at the homonym country. On the contrary of what people believe wasn't Moio eruption that formed Alcantara Goats. It's a little pleasant walk of some minutes, for everyone: both families and children.

Roccella Valdemona Waterfall

The excursion at Roccella Valdemona is one of the hardest and beautiest on east side of Nebrodi Mountain, straddle Nebrodi and Alcantara Natual Park(from arabic Al Qarant, that means: the bridge on the river, recalling the bridge built by Roman in the namesake place) . Roccella Old Town was once part of Nebrodi Park, nowaday  belongs to Alcantara Natural Park, cause the namesake torrent is one of Alcantara  tributaries. Site geology will be clear crossing the streets by car. Looking at the background is everywhere a triumph of water, and Alcantara tributaries are visible beside the street from Gangi to Roccella (in Messina district).

In succesion two itineraries for naturalist, or trekking lovers. The first in MTB, the second in trekking. The path is covered in about five/six hours (very slowly). You can find following informations in: Guida del Turismo  Alternativo in Sicilia - Vol I - ed. STS - (in some place we are descording with the text, cause in the time the path changes and some benchmark exist no more, such as the little wood bridge at the end of the waterfall, so we have to find  another way to cross the river). If it is not possible, or not easy to wade the torrent don't try do that !!!

Roccella Valdemone Waterfall in Mountain Bike

Driving along the Railroad A18 (CT-ME), exit at Giardini and following indications for Francavilla di Sicilia. Pass trough Gangi, Moio Alcantara and proceed in direction Roccella Valdemona. When you arrive in Roccella keep on Polverello direction (take the middle street, not the left for the old town, not the right damaged for landslide, follow always the strait central street). After about 2,8 kms of curves, hairpin bends and dogleg you'll see an abandoned sports ground on your left. Remember its for the return. Proceed strait till a little fork for Floresta (generally white and black road sign). Park the car and start the excursion, following the rocky path on the left. After 4.1 kms at the fork for Angara Palazzolo follows the sleepery glide path, it's very hard ... At the end of the  descent a bridge (of mud and cement) in front of you smooth land and a fork. Both the two path land to the waterfall, but the better view is form the right side of the torrent, so I suggest you to proceed on your right (cause, also, the little wooden bridge on the left side is no more available ... and it's impossible to cross the river). Above a hill 10 meters far from the wade you'll have a spectacular view of the waterfall. After being refreshed and restored nearby the cascade the last fatigue. Going on descent the rocky path you'll arrive at the abandoned sports ground, just last 2 kms for reaching the cars.

N.B. The excursion is very hard, and previous indications are just approximate, it's better to go to the waterfall with an expert naturalistical guide. If you wanna go alone be very, very carefull, and if you can't go on, no matter, ... come back at the car, and return another time. Important: take suits replacement, cause you'll drench ... !!!
