Cavagrande del Cassibile

Cassibile, a navigable river in XIVth century, nowaday is just a stream, but the rocks escaved from river and waterfalls is a breathless natural beauty. For reach the gorge you proceed on SS CT-SR, exit  Cassibile-Avola, following the direction for Cassibile or Avola Antica. When you reach a large square parking the car, cause here there is the entrance reserve. In front of you a work of thousand years erosed the rocks. The cave you seem to see is a neolithic village, with hundreds of caves, joined by staircases, aisles and trenches located on several floors. At your left the path starts. It will take you at the bottom.  On your right 3 crowded little lakes and a small waterfall, on your left quiet wilde lakes and the path, which reachs the village. To go to it you have to climb on the rock till you run into a "trazzera" (a narrow shepherds path) which leads at a spiral staircase at the end of whom there is the village entrance.

The Charmed Mill

There is another way to enjoy the nature of Cassibile River. On the road from Avola to Avola Antica. Left the car nearby a red iron bridge, and began to descend on the right. At the bottom proceed on an easy path, you'l reach some lakes. You can have a swimm Continuing on the path till you get to an old mill restored from a local family, and transformed in a small paradisiac oasis.

Going up on Ciane River

Even if you aren't a good canoist, you can live a nice experience. Starting from Syracuse harbour, crossing a strait of sea and going up Ciane River, it's the second stream (the 1st is Anapo, the 3rd a small Ciane's tributary). You listen just the stories told from the wind in the reeds, and the the waves break on the shores. To reach Papyrises Fount you have to get through the dam, or to transport the canoa for a little on the edge. You can proceed on to the source deeped in a luxuregiant nature.

If you don't want to go in canoa, you can go up confortably in boat, living the same suggestive atmospheare.

Enjoy youserlf, my brave explorers ....

... we began the visit with the souvenirs factory, in which beautiful "Kings' Tombs" painting were made on papyruses.  We attended at the precious vegetable weaving. They told us it is imported from that ineinexhaustible syracusan nursery flowed through the clear ancient Ciane River water ..."
